Yeha lies to the northeast of Axum, it is suggested that it has been the main Ethiopian capital during the pre-Axumite period.

It is also famed for its amazing rectangular stone temple, the oldest known sacred site in Ethiopia around the 500 BC.

The ruins of this large, pre-Christian temple, erected around the fifth century BC, consist of a single roofless oblong chamber 18.5 meters long by 15 meters wide. The windowless 12 meters high walls are built of smoothly polished stones, some of them more than 3 meters long, carefully placed one a top of  the other without the use of mortar.

As the birthplace of the country’s earliest high civilization, it is well worth visiting and now a day the temple, the church, and the small museum are visited regularly. Yeha is also the site for archaeological excavations.
