Lake Tana

Lake Tana, the largest lake in Ethiopia, situated north of the beautiful town of Bahir Dar is the source from where the famous Blue Nile starts its long journey to Khartoum, and to Mediterranean.

The 37 islands that is scattered about the surface of the lake, some 20 of these shelter churches and monasteries which have historical and cultural interest; decorated with beautiful paintings and housing innumerable treasures.

The islands and peninsulas of Lake Tana can most conveniently be approached by boat from Bahir Dar.

 

 

Lake Tana and the Blue Nile  Falls area  are  habitats for different species of birds and are good spot for birding.
