Day Excursion to Debre Libanos Monastery, Portuguese bridge and to the Blue Nile Gorge

This is a day trip to visit DebreLibanos Monastery which is an important monastic center for Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity. The monastery was founded by the renowned 13th century mystic St Teklehaimanot.
Here there is a modern church founded during Emperor Haile Sillassie’s reign which is decorated with beautiful religious paintings and window glass works.

After we visit DebreLibanos Monastery, nearby the main road, we will stop and walk to visit the 17th century Portuguese bridge and to see the Jemma River Gorge. The Jemma River is one of the tributaries of the Blue Nile River. In this area, you will also have a chance to see one of Ethiopia’s endemic mammals, the Gelada or bleeding heart baboon.

After this you will drive directly to the scenic Blue Nile Gorge, which some people compare it with the Grand Canyon of USA, is part of this trip. Leaving the Gorge, we drive back to Addis Ababa to arrive late in the afternoon.
